GRMFBS CH278
A spiritual type. Of course.
If Wan Shitong were truly a network-type, it would have been impossible for him to survive in Infinite until now. In fact, there was no such thing as a “network-type” in Infinite at all.
Compared to the technology of any given world, the spirit originating from the soul was a far more pervasive force.
Almost every player in Infinite possessed a few spiritual-type abilities, just as Wan Shitong similarly had physical combat capabilities.
The Monster Doctor was also a spiritual type.
But that guy usually mucked around with flesh and blood in a highly perverted manner, so most players assumed his primary ability lay in the direction of flesh and blood.
Gu Jiancheng had also discovered this when that idiot tried to plant the Mind-Link on him.
When he attempted to brainwash Gu Jiancheng, he used his spiritual-type ability, which was called… a spiritual scalpel.
—”Why does a moth suffer? Because it only knows that fire is bright, but doesn’t know that fire is hot.”
—”Ignorance is the root of all suffering.”
—”I am merely pursuing the truth.”
That trashy theory of his about “Salvation through Truth” had actually attracted a great number of players who had been driven mad by Infinite to follow him.
Gu Jiancheng was sick to death of them because the Monster Doctor later claimed that the key to unlocking the truth was on him. Consequently, this flock of brainwashed fools began to frantically hunt him down—aside from this bunch, few players in Infinite dared to go toe-to-toe with Deep Shadow, who was already Top 1.
As for why the Monster Doctor was so obsessed with Deep Shadow and claimed that the key to unlocking the truth lay on him, it was because Deep Shadow had survived the longest and was the strongest among all players with the ability to devour abnormalities.
The Monster Doctor believed he could study him to uncover the secrets of abnormalities, the Black Nest, and even Infinite itself…
“…Boss?”
Gu Jiancheng snapped out of his thoughts. Wan Shitong was looking at him with concern.
The Top 1 powerhouse, Deep Shadow, was habitually expressionless, making it impossible to guess his thoughts.
“Continue.”
Wan Shitong: “Uh… Boss, how about you take a moment to breathe first?”
In the Sea of Shadows, waves were rising across the previously dead-silent surface.
Gu Jiancheng: “…” He had maintained his poker face for nothing.
He took a deep breath and looked up at the stars in the sky.
Wan Shitong followed his gaze and looked up too.
While in Infinite, Wan Shitong had entered the Sea of Shadows a few times. Not many, and basically always during critical moments of crisis.
Back then, the Boss’s Sea of Shadows was often so violently turbulent that it resembled a category-eight mega-tsunami. Unless his life was genuinely hanging by a thread, Wan Shitong wasn’t keen on coming in—he was running for his life before entering, and he still had to run for his life after entering.
Wan Shitong recalled the time he had seen the Sea of Shadows at its “calmest.”
The Boss had been in the Sea of Shadows that time as well. The moment he entered, the churning, violent Sea of Shadows abruptly stilled. The sea’s surface became as smooth as a mirror, without a single ripple.
Wan Shitong had just breathed a sigh of relief when he instinctively looked down.
He felt as though he were looking into a mirror. It was the kind of mirror in a dimly lit room with barely any light, allowing one to see the mirror itself but not what it reflected—leaving only a chaotic, muddy blackness. The light and shadow within the mirror were changing, as if things were moving. He couldn’t see clearly, yet it felt as though they could burst out from the world on the other side of the mirror at any moment, separated only by that thin sheet of glass.
Gu Jiancheng was that sheet of glass.
From then on, Wan Shitong never dared to look down at Gu Jiancheng’s Sea of Shadows again.
But it was different now. Entering the Sea of Shadows this time, the familiar skin-crawling sensation did not appear. As Wan Shitong looked at the sea surface again, he could even detect a sense of broadness and tranquility that accommodated all things.
The Boss’s sequelae were truly completely cured.
Although Wan Shitong had been thoroughly spooked by the fact that the “spiritual type” had been forcibly altered into a “network-type,” he couldn’t help but feel happy at this moment.
The Boss’s boyfriend was super awesome!
Before, he had worried that the Boss would generate overly intense emotional fluctuations when falling in love, causing his sequelae to flare up. Who could have imagined that after dating for a few years, the Boss’s sequelae would actually get cured!
Just look at the Boss’s reaction now when his emotions fluctuated intensely. These rolling waves hadn’t even risen past his calves!
May the Boss and his boyfriend last forever!
This bit of waves vanished once Gu Jiancheng snapped out of it. Seeing him look up, Wan Shitong also looked up.
“Boss, why is there a star in your Sea of Shadows?”
Gu Jiancheng didn’t speak, but the corners of his mouth slowly curved up. That smile… tsk.
Wan Shitong felt like he had accidentally stumbled into a massive serving of relationship fluff.
The Boss was so in love that he had specifically lit a lamp for someone in his Sea of Shadows.
“I remember now.” Gu Jiancheng set aside those suddenly surfacing memories for the moment and continued to ask, “How did you remember?”
As Wan Shitong spoke, Gu Jiancheng pieced it together.
The spirit and the physical body—these were essential foundations for every living being.
All spiritual types had turned into network-types, and none had ever used spiritual-type abilities in reality. This wasn’t just a matter of memory; it was a change at a much higher level.
After parsing through it once, Gu Jiancheng pretty much understood why this world had implemented such a self-restriction.
Infinite devoured negative spiritual power. If people with powerful spiritual strength could not use it in reality, the food Infinite could gorge on would be cut down by a massive chunk. This was pulling the rug out from under Infinite’s feet.
But now that Wan Shitong had also recovered his memories and abilities, it meant that this world was lifting this self-restriction.
A major shift was about to happen.
Gu Jiancheng also thought of one person—Rong Sui.
Before this, Rong Sui was the only person who could directly use spiritual power. With such a massive case right in front of his eyes, he had stubbornly ignored all suspicious points and hadn’t suspected that there was something wrong with this world at all.
Why would this world give her a green light? She definitely knew something.
Oh right, he had sent a message to Rong Sui earlier saying he felt something was off. Now that Wan Shitong had finished explaining the matter of spiritual types and network-types to him, his perception had returned to normal.
Gu Jiancheng decided to go have a chat with Zhan Suiru.
Zhan Suiru had just overturned the Dawn World in her search, but she simply couldn’t find any issues.
The sky was already beginning to brighten now when Deep Shadow sent her a message saying his perception felt off because spiritual-type abilities had been modified into network-types.
Zhan Suiru: …A whole night’s work for nothing. And I still have to face Mom and Dad during the day.
Rong Sui: “‘Spirit’ was overridden by the concept of ‘Network.'”
“The reason I can use spiritual power is by routing it through the Dawn World.”
“Wan Shitong also has a portion of authority over the Dawn World, so he should also be able to route through the Dawn World to use spiritual power in the real world.”
Gu Jiancheng looked at Rong Sui’s reply. This was indeed similar to what Wan Shitong had said.
Wan Shitong said he had long since remembered he was a spiritual type, but for some reason, he could only remember it while inside the Dawn World, and would forget it all over again the moment he came out.
Wan Shitong had tried all sorts of methods back then to pass the message to him, but none succeeded, so he eventually just gave up.
Gu Jiancheng: “Is that why you went crazy a while back, looking for me to say there was something highly important, and then told me that the Broker went crazy in the black market because the Artisan ran off to the Abnormal Affairs Management Bureau?”
Wan Shitong: “…”
Boss, let’s just not mention dark history like that.
Zhan Suiru’s messages kept coming.
Rong Sui: “It is likely an effect generated by the Dawn World connecting to Reincarnation.”
The Dawn World was a world transitioning from the network into reality; it was bound to break through the concept of “Network” overriding the concept of “Spirit.”
Rong Sui: “Do not investigate further. Infinite has been watching.”
Zhan Suiru didn’t know why her younger brother possessed an ability like conceptual override, but she had always remembered the cautious attitude Ning Xi and her mother displayed when mentioning “Approaching Science.”
Deep Shadow was trustworthy, but regarding her younger brother’s matters, the fewer people who knew, the less danger there would be.
Gu Jiancheng understood her implication and did not press further.
Deep Shadow: “The Monster Doctor is also a spiritual type, and his ability is very troublesome.”
The overriding of “Spirit” by “Network” had not only restricted the spiritual types of this world, but it had also restricted the players coming out of Infinite.
According to this progression, when the Dawn World completely transitioned into reality, the concept of the spiritual type would likely be fully unveiled. The Monster Doctor would sooner or later be able to use his “spiritual scalpel” ability; they had to prepare in advance.
Gu Jiancheng set up a time to meet with the Abnormal Affairs Management Bureau for a detailed discussion. After cutting off the communication, the memories he had previously ignored resurfaced.
That was after the Amusement Park dungeon.
He had used Shadow Substitution twice in total within that dungeon to make it out alive. Forcing the use of Shadow Substitution the second time had nearly caused his ability to go out of control.
The Monster Doctor hadn’t fully exposed his perverted nature back then, but Gu Jiancheng had already deemed him off-putting based on intuition and began to distance himself.
Yet this dead pervert still seized an opportunity.
—”Is a person who kills one person more noble than a person who kills two?”
—”Is a person who kills criminals more moral than a person who kills the innocent?”
—”The people I kill have all killed others as well. Am I the hand executing justice?”
—”Stop these meaningless arguments. Morality is merely a trap.”
—”Trust, goodwill, love, betrayal, malice, and hatred are all nothing more than hormones secreted by the physical body.”
—”Believing in them will only reduce you to the state you are in now.”
—”Only by knowing the truth can one break free from Infinite.”
Gu Jiancheng gave a low snort.
Love wasn’t a hormone.
Hormones couldn’t cure his sequelae.
The Monster Doctor was just a dumbass!
…
In the early hours of the morning, Zhan Yan suddenly woke up. He blinked in confusion and reached for his phone to check the time. It was only just past four o’clock; had his biological clock malfunctioned? Or was he suddenly experiencing unfamiliar-bed syndrome?
Aside from the time, there was also a message notification from Gu Jiancheng on the phone screen.
Zhan Yan tapped open the message. It was Xiao Gu’s reply to him from last night, sent in a succession of several messages, all consisting of massive paragraphs.
As he read, he couldn’t help but smile.
Oh my, so happy after settling things with Big Brother?
Unfortunately, he still couldn’t let him meet the parents for the time being. The household was currently at its most chaotic; they had to wait at least until Mom and Dad finished dealing with the matter of their secret identities… Furthermore, Xiao Gu hadn’t farmed much favorability with Mom and Dad yet. Favorability farmed indirectly through his older brother and sister always made him feel a bit unstable.
But how should he farm Mom and Dad’s favorability? They didn’t have any troubles that needed solving…
Better to drag the troublesome matters out until daytime.
Zhan Yan pressed the voice message button and sent a sleepy voice note to the overly excited Xiao Gu.
After sending it, he yawned, rolled over, and fell back asleep.
Gu Jiancheng’s phone suddenly rang with a special notification tone.
Hmm? Yan Yan’s? Isn’t Yan Yan usually still asleep at this hour?
He tapped it open to listen.
Zhan Yan’s sleepy voice was light and soft, slurring somewhat with a slight trail at the end, like the ripples patted up by a fish’s tail as it turned around.
“Suddenly woke up, miss you. I’m so sleepy, going back to sleep. Mwah.”
Thump-thump, thump-thump.
Gu Jiancheng pressed a hand over his heart.
The unhappy memories were whipped into a corner by a single flick of a tail, and every corner of his heart was flooded to the brim with light, soft ripples.
