Extra Chapter: If line

“Ring, ring, ring—”

When the bell for the first morning reading session rang, Xie Yuanxing finally stepped into the classroom, just in time.

The noisy classroom quieted down as the bell rang. The English teacher walked in, saying, “Take out the newspapers from yesterday.”

At the same time, she started playing the English listening audio. The whole process was repeated every two days, like a fixed formula.

Xie Yuanxing casually spread out an English test paper that looked like a newspaper, propped his cheek on his hand, and started yawning.

Someone next to him said in a low voice, “You took out the wrong one. It’s not this one.”

Xie Yuanxing glanced at him and pouted unhappily, “None of your business.”

His English scores were good, and Xie Yuanxing was never willing to do these listening exercises anyway. Plus, it was winter, and the morning reading sessions were particularly prone to making one drowsy.

Once the audio started playing, the male and female voices in his ears were especially hypnotic. Xie Yuanxing could always get a good nap during English class.

Putting out a test paper was just for show.

Yawning, Xie Yuanxing stole a glance at the English teacher sitting at the front desk. With a pen in one hand and his cheek in the other, he was ready to sleep.

But the person next to him spoke again, “Can you stop yawning all the time? It’s very annoying.”

Xie Yuanxing frowned and looked at him, his beautiful face filled with impatience. “I haven’t affected you in any way since I came in, have I?”

“What’s your problem, Shen Bianye?”

Shen Bianye said with a calm expression, “Are you angry?”

“Good that you’re angry.”

Xie Yuanxing’s dark eyes widened. He could suppress his voice, but not his anger. “Are you sick in the head?”

Shen Bianye: “The dean of students is on patrol today. Anyone caught sleeping will have to write a self-criticism and stand as punishment.”

“I helped you wake up. You’re welcome.”

“Do the listening exercise. Don’t talk.”

After saying that, he looked away. His well-defined fingers held the pen, the tip gliding as he started the listening exercise.

Xie Yuanxing was furious. Seeing his attitude made him even angrier. “Who asked for your thanks?”

“Is there something wrong with your brain?”

The next second, someone tapped him on the shoulder. “Come out with me for a moment.”

Xie Yuanxing turned his head stiffly and saw the dean of students, who had appeared behind him at some point, staring at him grimly.

As he stood up, he shot a fierce glare at Shen Bianye, then threw down his pen and trudged out after the dean.

A soft gel pen with a star dangling from the end rolled twice on the desk, teetered on the edge, and fell.

Shen Bianye reached out and caught it. His hand clenched the cartoon star tightly, his knuckles white from the force, a hint of懊恼 (annoyance) in his eyes.

In less than five minutes, Xie Yuanxing returned, crestfallen.

Talking during morning reading. He was spared from standing, but he couldn’t escape the self-criticism.

Xie Yuanxing looked at Shen Bianye, who glanced up at him, and his anger flared.

He furiously scribbled on a piece of paper, crumpled it into a ball, and threw it at Shen Bianye’s face as if to vent his anger.

Go to hell!

Shen Bianye watched the paper ball fly towards his face, hesitated for a moment, and didn’t block it.

Only after the paper ball hit him and the furious person finally let out a哼笑 (scoff) did he reach out and catch the falling paper ball.

The crumpled piece of paper was smoothed out in front of him, and the flamboyant handwriting appeared before his eyes.

“The dean told me to write a 1000-word self-criticism and hand it in to the office tomorrow. Are you satisfied?!”

Each character was written huge, the sentence filling an entire sheet of homework paper. The force behind the writing was evident, showing just how angry he was.

Shen Bianye looked at it, tossed the paper ball into his desk drawer, and wrote a sentence for Xie Yuanxing on a new piece of paper.

His action was natural, as if he put the old paper away simply because Xie Yuanxing’s writing had filled it up.

Shen Bianye: “Sorry, I just wanted to remind you that the dean would catch you if you slept.”

“Also, let’s not pass notes anymore.”

Last time, Xie Yuanxing had been caught sleeping in exactly this way.

Usually, with Xie Yuanxing’s grades, the teachers would turn a blind eye to such things.

But unfortunately, Xie Yuanxing had been caught the day after the dean had made a big announcement about it. It was when the rules were being strictly established, so once caught, there was no escape.

From where they sat, they couldn’t see if anyone was coming from the back door. He wanted to keep a lookout for Xie Yuanxing, but he was powerless to help.

Xie Yuanxing glanced at the note passed to him, crumpled it up, and threw it back at Shen Bianye. He held his anger in until the morning reading was over.

The moment the bell for the end of class rang, he turned to Shen Bianye, his eyes blazing. “If you wanted to remind me, couldn’t you have just spoken nicely?”

“What did you mean by saying my yawning was annoying you?”

Shen Bianye looked at him calmly. “If I reminded you nicely, would you have listened?”

Xie Yuanxing was at a loss for words, but quickly lifted his chin slightly. “If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have been caught by the dean for talking too loudly and been forced to write a self-criticism.”

Shen Bianye: “Fine. I’ll write this self-criticism for you.”

Xie Yuanxing’s brow furrowed slightly. He was quite troubled and hesitated for a moment. He really didn’t want to write this. But having someone else write it was even worse. The handwriting was different, and it would be easily discovered.

Xie Yuanxing pouted unwillingly. “I don’t need your fake kindness.”

Shen Bianye looked at him, not saying anything.

His eyes were deep and black. His handsome face had sharp features, and when he looked at someone with focus, he had a strong presence.

Xie Yuanxing was made very uncomfortable by his stare, like a beautiful little cat with its fur on end. Though he was secretly a little scared, he held his ground, refusing to back down.

They stared at each other, eye to eye.

“What are you two doing? Are you about to kiss?”

Zhou Chao from the back row drawled, even letting out a whistle.

Xie Yuanxing whipped his head around, his beautiful face exceptionally striking when angry. “Aren’t you disgusting?”

Next to him, Shen Bianye watched him, his eyes slowly darkening.

Zhou Chao spread his hands in an innocent gesture. “Just a joke. It really looked like it.”

Xie Yuanxing glared at him. “If you can’t see properly, then poke your eyes out.”

The two of them bantered back and forth. Shen Bianye stood up. “I’m going to get some water.”

He bent his finger and tapped Xie Yuanxing’s desk. “Give me your cup.”

Xie Yuanxing naturally handed his cup to Shen Bianye.

There were no water dispensers in their school’s classrooms. The entire floor had to get water from the direct-drinking fountains at either end of the hallway.

Not long ago, he had made a bet with Shen Bianye. Shen Bianye lost and had to get water for Xie Yuanxing for the entire semester.

After Shen Bianye left, Xie Yuanxing took out a piece of homework paper and started chewing on the end of his pen, thinking about what to write for the self-criticism.

In the classroom, some were eating breakfast, some were catching up on sleep, and some were laughing and talking. Only he was here writing a self-criticism.

He couldn’t think of a single word. The more Xie Yuanxing thought about it, the angrier he got. He crumpled up a piece of paper and threw it onto Shen Bianye’s desk.

Zhou Chao behind him chuckled. “That’s not going to vent your anger, is it?”

Xie Yuanxing turned around. “Then what do you suggest?”

“I can’t do anything to Shen Bianye. I can’t just hire someone to beat him up.”

Zhou Chao: “Just make him write a self-criticism too.”

Xie Yuanxing slammed the table in anger, but afraid of hurting his hand, he didn’t use much force, only managing to look imposing. “How am I supposed to make Shen Bianye write a self-criticism?!”

“He never makes any mistakes.” He then pouted, a little unhappy. “And besides, he’s the top student in the grade. The teachers all treasure him.”

Shen Bianye was a special admission student who had transferred in during the second year of high school. It was said that his family wasn’t well-off, and his tuition was waived because of his grades. If he got into a top university, the school would even give him a bonus.

As the former number one in the grade, Xie Yuanxing had actually been secretly annoyed with Shen Bianye for a long time.

A glint flashed in Zhou Chao’s long, narrow eyes. He leaned closer to Xie Yuanxing and said in a low voice, “That’s simple.”

“Do you still remember the incident where the class representative was caught by the head teacher for writing a love letter to his girlfriend in class?”

Xie Yuanxing nodded. “I remember. What about it?”

Zhou Chao: “You can date Shen Bianye. Whenever you’re angry, you can make him write all sorts of self-criticisms. If he gets caught like the class rep, you can even watch him get embarrassed.”

Xie Yuanxing was speechless.

“And then when the head teacher asks who it was for, Shen Bianye says it was for me, is that it?”

“You should date him instead. I wish you both happiness.”

Zhou Chao clicked his tongue. “An online relationship. An online relationship would work.”

“You can also use the relationship to affect his studies. That way, you can overtake him and reclaim your number one spot, right?”

Xie Yuanxing hesitated.

Zhou Chao: “When you get tired of playing, you can just ask to meet in person.”

“Shen Bianye goes with full expectations, only to see it’s you. The great top student in the grade, tricked by a catfishing scheme.”

“You get this leverage on him, and I guarantee he won’t dare to provoke you for the rest of the year, believe it or not.”

Xie Yuanxing was tempted.

“But isn’t it not very nice to trick people…?”

Zhou Chao: “You’re not tricking him out of money.”

He added the final piece of fuel to the fire. “Besides, do you really not want to get back your number one spot?”

“And you don’t want to get revenge for the 1000-word self-criticism he just got you?”

Xie Yuanxing was ready to take action. “Tell me, what kind of person does someone like Shen Bianye like?”

He wouldn’t affect Shen Bianye’s grades too much, just pull them down a little bit.

Shen Bianye needed the school’s scholarship, but being second in the grade could still get him into a top university and earn the bonus.

Xie Yuanxing just didn’t like someone coming out of nowhere and suppressing him.

And someone so annoying at that.

When Shen Bianye came back with the water, he saw Xie Yuanxing talking to Zhou Chao again.

There was a long line to get water after the morning reading session. He had waited for a while. So, however long he had waited, that’s how long those two had been talking?

Did they have that much to talk about?

What was so good about talking to Zhou Chao?

Smiling so happily.

Tsk.

His brow furrowed tightly. When he walked over and saw them both stop talking in unison as he approached, his face darkened slightly.

“What were you talking about?”

Shen Bianye placed the water cup on Xie Yuanxing’s desk, speaking as if by chance.

Xie Yuanxing’s dark eyes were shining, and the tear mole under his eye seemed to dance. “It has nothing to do with you, anyway.”

Shen Bianye spent the whole morning trying but failed to find out what Xie Yuanxing and Zhou Chao had talked about.

It wasn’t until noon, when he brought lunch for Xie Yuanxing who was writing his self-criticism, that he learned the whole story from Zhou Chao.

Zhou Chao: “This is all I can do to help you, bro.”

Shen Bianye raised an eyebrow. “Thanks.”

That evening, after his mother picked him up, Xie Yuanxing secretly used a side account to send a friend request to Shen Bianye.

Soft Star: “Can we date, gege (older brother)?”

At this time, most of the students living in the dorms were washing up and getting ready for bed. He thought he would have to wait a long time, but unexpectedly, the request was accepted as soon as he sent it.

x: “Date?”

x: “Sure.”

x: “Let’s see your legs.”

Xie Yuanxing was stunned. He repeatedly checked the contact number, making sure he hadn’t added the wrong person.

Online, Shen Bianye’s personality was actually like this?
