“What? He didn’t even accept extra payment to work with Approaching Science, but now he’s running off to the Wan Yao Alliance to work for free?”
“Wasn’t he trying to save up points to exchange for a Tianshi’s Thunder Talisman?!”
“Didn’t he think the Tianshis were super cool?!”
“What kind of brainwashing did the Wan Yao Alliance do to him?!”
Nie Yu angrily slammed his keyboard as he questioned Luo Wang and forwarded the latest situation to the internal group chat of relevant people in the Bureau.
The internal group chat was filled with question marks.
They had worked really well with Approaching Science before! The Tianshi and the Ling Yu had smooth communications with Approaching Science—there had been no issues at all!
Why the sudden change in attitude?
Luo Wang responded again:
“I didn’t do anything.”
“Maybe your overbearing ways scared him off?”
Nie Yu synced his conversation with Luo Wang into the group.
Overbearing style? Approaching Science had known about the Bureau’s control-freak nature from the beginning—that shouldn’t have been an issue. Otherwise, he would’ve left long ago. They also hadn’t investigated Approaching Science recently, so it couldn’t be that either.
If there was a style issue lately… then the problem was right in their chat group.
Everyone’s gaze turned to the Great Ritual Dancer.
Ling Zhou Wen Di: ??
Tianshi: “@Great Ritual Dancer You’re the one who scared him off.”
Nie Yu: “Exactly! [Condemn] [Condemn]”
Lingzhou Wendi: “…Kids are so easy to tease these days.”
Meanwhile, the Wan Yao Alliance had preliminary results from interrogating the traitor.
The Corpse Flower Demon wasn’t the mastermind—just a low-level pawn who got discarded as soon as he lost his value.
The mastermind was deeply hidden, and the taro demon didn’t know much. But his actions within the Alliance revealed a few clues.
As for whether to accept help from Approaching Science, Luo Wang couldn’t decide alone—especially since the Chongming Demon King was very upset. He needed to ask first.
Zhan Yunkai was cooking.
Zhan Yan would be heading back to school that afternoon, so he was preparing some simple meals for him to take.
Zhan Yan was circling the kitchen, surrounded by delicious aromas and feeling completely content.
The Chongming Demon King himself was cooking for him! How could he not lean toward the Wan Yao Alliance?
“If you’re hungry, go ahead and eat a bit. I made a lot,” said Zhan Yunkai.
“Me too!” Zhan Suiru popped out and grabbed a chicken wing.
“Hey! Did you wash your hands?” Zhan Yunkai tapped her hand with chopsticks.
“I did!” Zhan Suiru dodged nimbly.
Zhan Yan filled half a bowl with rice, then stuffed it with chicken wings.
With a few hours before he had to leave, they decided to watch a movie together. Originally, Ji Yueming was supposed to choose.
Ji Yueming tousled Zhan Yan’s curls. “I can never decide—you pick.”
Zhan Yan picked a horror movie.
“Anyone afraid?” he asked.
Zhan Yunkai and Ji Yueming exchanged glances. Come to think of it… despite being long-time partners, they hadn’t tried the horror movie routine yet.
Zhan Yan looked at his sister. “If you’re scared, you can hold my arm.”
Zhan Suiru laid out a full spread of snacks and handed him chips. “Don’t underestimate your sister. Maybe I’ll be the one you cling to!”
Zhan Yan had never watched a horror movie before. He wasn’t scared—just thought they were boring. But Gu Jiancheng seemed to enjoy them and told scary stories so well, so he figured he’d give them a shot.
As the movie played, Zhan Yunkai and Ji Yueming gradually leaned into each other.
The screen was filled with gore.
Zhan Suiru had already devoured half a plate of wings and was now crunching chips.
Zhan Yan held fries in one hand, ketchup in the other, fully focused.
Zhan Yunkai and Ji Yueming exchanged another worried look.
Were the kids fearless, or just… weird?
Halfway through, Zhan Suiru got bored. The plot was average—the horror effects were decent, but she’d seen far worse in the apocalypse. Without fear, the film’s rating dropped in half.
She nudged Zhan Yan with her elbow. “If you’re scared, you don’t have to pretend.”
“I’m not scared,” Zhan Yan said as he snatched a handful of her chips.
“Shhh!” Zhan Yunkai hushed them.
Kids truly were the greatest obstacle to couples enjoying a good movie.
The siblings quieted down.
When the movie ended, Ji Yueming saw the director’s name in the credits. “Hey, didn’t you work with this guy before?”
Zhan Yunkai recognized the name. “Oh, yeah. Ji Lele. Interesting guy. The only horror director at Ming Tang Pictures. But he can’t watch his own films.”
Rumor had it he cried the first time he screened his own horror movie.
That afternoon, Zhan Yan, carrying his food pack, returned to school—only to be stopped.
A white long-haired cat stood before him, sat down politely, and gazed at him with golden eyes.
It looked… familiar.
“Do you want something?” Zhan Yan asked.
The polite little white cat looked at his backpack. “Meow.”
“Want.”
Zhan Yan was surprised. “How can a cat’s nose be that good?”
But he still refused. “No. That’s for humans. It’s seasoned—you can’t eat it.”
“Meow.” The cat stepped closer, lowered its head, and rubbed against him.
“Want.”
“No,” Zhan Yan sidestepped.
The cat stepped in front again, its golden eyes unwavering. “Meow.”
[You have been entangled by a polite but persistent little white cat with a unique digestive ability.]
After several back-and-forths, Zhan Yan gave in. He offered the cat one chicken wing. Since the system confirmed its digestive ability, one wing shouldn’t hurt.
The cat looked incredibly happy as it bit into the wing.
Zhan Yan took the chance to slip away.
Back at school, he received a reply from Luo Wang. The Wan Yao Alliance had given him a mission: investigate the anomaly tied to the Corpse Flower Konjac Demon.
During interrogation, they found a strange imprint in the demon’s soul. His mission was to trace its origin and function.
Zhan Yan searched by keywords and discovered a new term: “Heart Lead ”.
It was categorized under “Object,” and the discovery filled up his energy bar.
[Oh no, another unknown object? Just a small thing—nothing can stop me from eating snacks! Here’s your item description!]
Sweet! Item description unlocked!
A small triangle icon appeared under each term. Clicking it opened up more info.
[“Heart Lead,” from the Infinite World, soft and white, resembling silk. It can… ]
Zhan Yan read the description and winced. This thing was vicious.
However, the mark on the demon wasn’t that severe. It was just a trace left by the Heart Lead, ensuring the demon couldn’t reveal anything about the mastermind. It didn’t allow full soul control.
In other words, the demon had betrayed willingly—or he had an ulterior motive from the moment he entered the Alliance.
Zhan Yan organized the information and sent it to Luo Wang, earning a huge amount of points.
It was… about half of what his dad earned? He felt a bit guilty taking it.
Zhan Yan hinted gently. Standard pay was fine—no need for the Chongming Demon King to pay double out of pocket.
“We’re all on the same side!”
Luo Wang: “How did you find this out?”
But then he realized—wasn’t Approaching Science a top-tier info class? He probably figured it out himself!
That was… kinda scary. He’d managed to bypass even the Chongming Demon King’s information obfuscation?
Luo Wang immediately reported it.
Meanwhile, Zhan Yunkai was reading a report from Gong Yun, who had compiled the Alliance’s latest findings.
As he read, a cold smile crept onto his face. His twin pupils radiated such majesty that it was hard to even lift your head.
“He’s looking for Bai Ze,” Zhan Yunkai said softly. His voice hit the floor like glass and jade, sharp and chilling.
“Contact the Abnormal Affairs Management Bureau.”
This time, he spoke directly to Deputy Director Ning Xi.
Ning Xi had dark circles and looked sleep-deprived.
He understood why the Chongming Demon King had contacted him.
Garbled Anomaly No. 2 and the Corpse Flower Konjac Demon had been after Infinite Fragments in Beiling City. But wanting the fragments didn’t necessarily mean wanting Infinite Revival—the Chongming Demon King’s comment was sarcastic, and Ning Xi pretended not to notice.
The Infinite Fragments were extremely valuable for research. Many of the Bureau’s black technologies—like their teleporting HQ—came from studying them.
But if someone wanted both the fragments and was searching for Bai Ze, it could only mean one thing: the Will of the Infinite was awakening, and plotting full revival.
“Didn’t Bai Ze fall in battle 26 years ago?” Ning Xi frowned.
“So they’re after his remains,” Zhan Yunkai said icily. “Bones, flesh, skin, fur, claws, eyes… You humans know best how to dissect and exploit a demon’s corpse, don’t you?”
Ning Xi sighed deeply and rubbed his temples. “Lord Chongming…”
After talking with Ning Xi, Zhan Yunkai received an update from Luo Wang.
To be fair, Ning Xi wasn’t bad—aside from being a control freak. And that didn’t really affect a demon king anyway.
Still, Zhan Yunkai was annoyed with the whole Bureau—so he was annoyed with Ning Xi by default.
When Luo Wang mentioned Approaching Science’s strength, Zhan Yunkai sent back a deadpan emoji.
“Didn’t he also uncover the Shenyuan Ghost King’s online alias before?”
Wasn’t it long established that Approaching Science was highly capable?
Luo Wang: …Oh, right.
The whole “online alias” thing felt insignificant, but Chongming Demon King paying out of pocket sounded serious!
Zhan Yunkai figured she’d been brainwashed by Approaching Science’s snack-obsessed attitude.
What he really wanted to know was: what would Approaching Science think when he realized half his points came from the Chongming Demon King?
Luo Wang forwarded the conversation logs, including Approaching Science’s refusal of the Bureau’s high-paying offer, and his proactive willingness to help the Wan Yao Alliance for free.
The previously upset Chongming Demon King read his response and smiled warmly.
“Aww… What’s there to feel guilty about? How happy and grateful he is! What a good kid!”
