Chapter 126: Who the f*ck is dreaming….
Lin Xi actually just wanted to tease him a little.
After all, from the time he met Gu Beiqiu until now, this adjutant of his rarely showed his emotions. But he never expected that such a casual sentence would make the person in front of him burst into even more uncontrollable tears. This young Executor of Hua Country, who could remain unperturbed even when Mount Tai collapsed before him at the meetings of the International Ability General Administration, was now sobbing uncontrollably, his shoulders shaking violently.
Lin Xi: “…Why are you the one crying first? No matter how you look at it, the one who should be crying more is me.”
“I’m sorry… Executor, I’m sorry… I’m really sorry…”
Gu Beiqiu subconsciously wanted to get closer to Lin Xi but was pushed away in disgust by the latter. “Go away, go away. Your snot and tears are all mixed together. Don’t wipe them all on my clothes.”
Gu Beiqiu’s emotional moment was forcibly cut short, but he also calmed down a little under Lin Xi’s interruption. “I…”
He slowly closed his eyes. When he opened them again, he had already restrained the overwhelming emotions from seeing Lin Xi again. “I’ve done many things, and they were all wrong.”
Lin Xi smiled. “I understand. You were wrong, but you couldn’t change it, right?”
At these words, Gu Beiqiu’s body trembled slightly.
“It seems you also understand now. In this position, rationality and sensibility are never on equal footing. In fact, starting from different points, you will get completely different results.”
Lin Xi leaned back leisurely on the sofa behind him, his limbs stretched out, a half-smile in his arrogant vertical pupils. “This is the seat I once sat in, so from this standpoint, I don’t plan to blame you.”
The corner of Gu Beiqiu’s mouth trembled slightly. “Then you…”
The next second, he heard Lin Xi continue in a slow, unhurried tone. “Not blaming doesn’t mean forgiving. After all, no one hopes that after their death, the precious apprentice they raised with their own hands not only fails to reveal the truth but even collaborates with the real murderer.”
An expected answer.
Gu Beiqiu’s face turned pale. “I also shouldn’t have hoped for your forgiveness.”
Lin Xi looked at him. “I basically know the whole story of what happened back then. The person who orchestrated that accident was Shen Nanyang. I don’t plan to pursue you for what you did. Asking you what you did wrong was just to confirm one last thing.”
Gu Beiqiu: “Please ask.”
Lin Xi said slowly, “Regarding what happened back then, when did you learn the truth?”
Before coming to see Lin Xi, Gu Beiqiu had already made all the mental preparations. Hearing this, he answered almost without hesitation. “After you self-destructed, I was designated to take over the position of Executor. Not long after I moved into your office, Shen Nanyang came to see me. He told me everything directly.”
“And then, he let you choose your side?” Lin Xi found it amusing. “That’s his style.”
He glanced at Gu Beiqiu faintly. “No need to ask about the result. It can be said that it was completely expected. You chose to stand with him.”
Gu Beiqiu did not offer any defense. “I couldn’t question the future of humanity that he predicted, nor could I let all of humanity be buried with you just to avenge you. At that time, I couldn’t do anything. All I could do was… follow Shen Nanyang’s needs, cover up the truth of your death, and preserve your lifelong achievements.”
At this point, his fists slowly clenched a little. The tone of this last sentence was unprecedentedly firm. “Shen Nanyang used such an extreme method for his high-sounding reason. I couldn’t expose what he did, nor could I let your reputation be tarnished because of it. No matter when, you are the greatest hero of humanity, always.”
[Do you humans always like to put high hats on each other for PUA?]
Lin Xi listened to the doubtful voice in his head and gave a noncommittal laugh. His words were directed at Gu Beiqiu. “Alright, I understand.”
Gu Beiqiu was momentarily stunned. “You understand… that’s it?”
“Anyway, as long as I know you didn’t collude with Shen Nanyang from the beginning, that’s enough.” Lin Xi raised his hand and very naturally ruffled Gu Beiqiu’s hair.
Gu Beiqiu had been in his position for many years and had already established enough prestige among the public. In terms of temperament, he was long since different from the adjutant of back then, but Lin Xi’s action still seemed incredibly natural and not out of place at all. “Although I’m not human anymore, I still understand the principle of ‘every injustice has its perpetrator, every debt its debtor.’ It’s just as I guessed. At most, you were just an accomplice who helped with the cover-up. Although I can’t say I forgive you just like that, I won’t take out all my anger on you. This score, I still have to find a chance to settle properly with Shen Nanyang.”
“Executor…” Although Gu Beiqiu did not receive “forgiveness,” how different was Lin Xi’s current attitude from the result he had once thought was a vain hope?
Complicated emotions enveloped his chest. He opened his mouth, moved, but before he could speak, he was pulled by a force by his collar.
When Gu Beiqiu came to his senses, he had been lifted from the ground by Lin Xi.
Lin Xi even considerately smoothed out the disheveled wrinkles on his shoulders. “You’re the dignified Chief Executor of Hua Country, after all. If someone saw you kneeling before me, I would really never be able to clear my name.”
Gu Beiqiu stammered, “I arranged it so no one would come in.”
“Better safe than sorry.” Lin Xi smoothed the hem of Gu Beiqiu’s clothes and said slowly, “The contamination radiation here is still too strong. Prolonged exposure is not a good thing. There’s already one X-rank ability user lying here. We can’t have an Executor lying here too because of losing control of his ability.”
The implication was clearly an order to leave.
Gu Beiqiu hesitated for a moment but still reminded, “Shen Nanyang should have a reagent that can stabilize the contamination value.”
“I know, but I don’t want to use it.” Lin Xi’s righteous reply directly shut Gu Beiqiu’s mouth.
He glanced at the person on the bed out of the corner of his eye and said, “Don’t look down on this contamination radiation. Ordinary people avoid it like the plague, but for a certain someone, my contamination radiation is a powerful tool to soothe him. If I weren’t here, I’m not sure how long he could continue to be this stable.”
Gu Beiqiu’s brow furrowed slightly. “But you can’t go on like this forever.”
“That’s my business.” Lin Xi patted Gu Beiqiu’s shoulder gently, his tone earnest. “Beiqiu, everyone has their own choices. You have yours, and I have mine. We just have to not regret the decisions we make. At least, I never regret.”
After a brief silence, Gu Beiqiu nodded. “Executor, I understand.”
Lin Xi emphasized, “Don’t call me Executor anymore. The person sitting in this position now is you.”
As the door of the isolation room closed again, the surroundings fell into silence, with only the mocking voice appearing in his mind.
[How generous. Even at this point, you’re still reluctant to take it out on this good adjutant you raised with your own hands?]
[Yo yo yo, the person sitting in this position now is you. If I only heard this sentence, I would have thought you were still racking your brains for the future of humanity.]
[Is this what you humans call a legacy? So touching, so tear-jerking, boo-hoo, I’m about to cry from it.]
“If you wish, I can make you cry right now.”
One sentence finally quieted that noisy voice.
Lin Xi narrowed his eyes slightly.
Perhaps it was somewhat influenced by the contamination value, but he felt that his tolerance for Calamity’s nagging was really getting lower and lower. After all, having a voice that could pop up in your head at any time was really annoying, especially since this guy was talkative and loved to show off, constantly trying to drive a wedge between him and humanity. In a way, it was truly an insult to the firmness of his mind.
If his will had been even a little bit weaker, he would never have been able to sit in the position of Hua Country’s Chief Executor for so long.
Lin Xi stood in place and watched the direction Gu Beiqiu had left for a while, then turned and walked slowly to the bedside.
The person on the bed still had his eyes closed, dense connecting lines monitoring the supernatural fluctuations on his body at all times.
Lin Xi’s eyelids drooped slightly. Suddenly, without any warning, he bent down. At such a close distance, their lips were almost touching.
“Yan Xingzhou, still reluctant to open your eyes?”
A soft chuckle, like a tease, yet also like a mockery, every word falling clearly in the enclosed space.
The next second, a hand suddenly shot up, wrapped around the back of Lin Xi’s neck, and with a pull, brought him directly into an embrace.
Their soft lips finally touched. With their bodies pressed tightly together, the two could clearly feel each other’s throbbing heartbeats.
Lin Xi’s breathing was disrupted by the sudden kiss. He quickly came back to his senses and reached out to push away this man who was trying to divert his attention.
He met Yan Xingzhou’s bottomless eyes and raised an eyebrow with a half-smile. “Afraid of me holding you accountable, so you’re just going to play dumb? Yan Xingzhou, you were already awake just now, weren’t you? I thought you’d been pretending to be asleep for so long, you should have thought of a better coping strategy.”
“Facing you, I don’t need a coping strategy.”
Yan Xingzhou held Lin Xi’s hand and squeezed it gently. “I just had a very long dream and needed to wake up a little.”
Due to fatigue, his voice was extremely hoarse, carrying a unique magnetic quality, drifting faintly to a place far beyond this room. “I seem to always be losing you, over and over again. Or perhaps, this place right now… is the dream I don’t want to wake up from?”
Losing, over and over again. Despairing, over and over again.
Yan Xingzhou looked up at Lin Xi, countless waves surging deep within his calm expression, as if he were probing, and also as if he were confirming. “But, it doesn’t matter even if it’s a dream.”
Lin Xi had thought this man had finally woken up, but now it seemed he was still trapped in that nightmare he was unwilling to face.
Hearing that “it doesn’t matter even if it’s a dream,” he was so angry he laughed.
Without giving Yan Xingzhou any chance to react, he sneered and kissed him again.
A kiss far more intense and lingering than before. Rather than giving, it was more like an emotional release.
Their increasingly heavy breaths intertwined, carrying a fragmented greed. Finally, with a shared sharp pain, the faint taste of blood from their broken lips spread in their mouths.
Lin Xi’s tilted neck refracted a sexy, smooth arc in the light. After his throat rolled a few times, he finally squeezed out a soft curse through his broken gasps. “Look clearly, I’m really in front of you… Who the f*ck is dreaming.”
