Chapter 104: Accompanying the Boss to Pick Up Sister-in-Law Home.
—The Ark Project.
On the top floor of the Hua Country United Administration headquarters building, the meeting now over, Gu Beiqiu turned around. What fell into his field of vision were the four large, blocky characters on the big screen.
All arrangements were in place, the orders had been issued, and everything would proceed in an orderly manner according to the established plan. But just as everyone was marveling at his foresight, Gu Beiqiu’s face for a moment could not maintain its usual calm smile.
“Executor, if you knew what I’ve done, you’d probably want to climb out of the ground and beat me up good.”
A bitter smile appeared on his face. Gu Beiqiu pressed a button on the desk to turn off the screen, picked up his vibrating phone, and after checking the caller ID, pressed the answer key. “Professor Shen, is everything going smoothly on your end?”
Shen Nanyang’s usual calm voice came from the other end of the phone. “He has already given me the item. Everything will proceed according to plan.”
“That’s good.” Gu Beiqiu stood before the French window. Looking down from here, the entire J City was already surrounded by towering protective walls erected by supernatural users, but otherwise, the city was still immersed in an atmosphere of prosperity. The endless stream of vehicles and people bustled about their lives. On the mainland, far from the sea, no one knew that a storm was about to silently sweep across the entire human world.
After a long silence, he spoke again. “You’re sure this is our only correct path, right?”
“Of course,” Shen Nanyang replied. “And, this is also humanity’s only correct choice.”
With those words, a trace of determination gradually appeared in Gu Beiqiu’s downcast eyes. “In 2 hours, the Ark Project will officially be activated.”
Although separated by a wall, in that instant Gu Beiqiu seemed to feel the wind swirling around the tall building. The voice on the other end of the phone was like the wind itself, intangible and ethereal. “I will let us welcome a bright future together.”
By the time Lin Xi received the order from headquarters, the fierce battle at the seaside had temporarily subsided.
But “temporary” did not mean it was over. At the very least, the dense clusters of tissue floating on the sea surface were still squirming restlessly. It was only because they had been blasted into such small pieces that they needed time to regrow, giving the front line a brief moment to breathe.
And the realization of all this was thanks to some powerful support.
Although the enmity between the United Administration and the Wanyuan Group was well-known, when the convoy of vehicles bearing the group’s LOGO arrived with equipment, the members of the United Administration still couldn’t help but weep with joy.
After the battle situation stabilized, the coastal defense network was further consolidated.
All layout adjustments were fully displayed on the screens of the main monitoring room. As the placements along each route were confirmed, Lin Xi saw the equipment replacement locations getting closer and closer to him. Calculating that the time was about right, he turned around just in time to see the door of the main control room being pushed open from the outside. A familiar figure walked straight into his line of sight.
Backlit, with just a seemingly casual glance, his brows furrowed slightly.
He seems to have lost weight.
Su Muye, who had come along, had been chattering nonstop the whole way, tearfully complaining to his boss about how hard his job was. Upon entering, he sensed a subtle change in the atmosphere. His gaze shifted between the two men, and he tactfully fell silent.
A brief silence fell over the room.
Lin Xi rested one hand on the back of his chair. In the silence, he slowly raised an eyebrow, his tone filled with undisguised teasing. “President Yan, long time no see. How long are you planning to stay this time? You won’t leave without saying goodbye again, will you?”
Yan Xingzhou: “…”
Lin Xi’s overly sarcastic tone made Su Muye even more confused. He looked at Lin Xi, then at his boss, but didn’t dare to make a sound. Ju Ze, who was following behind, knew a little about the reason and cleared his throat softly, speaking at the right time to break the awkwardness. “Mr. Lin, regarding the President’s schedule, you can just ask me directly. Due to the severe situation in the coastal area this time, the President has already postponed all other matters. He will stay here with you for the next few days, until the situation is completely stable.”
Lin Xi smiled at Yan Xingzhou. “That’s so nice, you’ll be with me for the next few days?”
Ju Ze replied, “Actually, I was supposed to be the one delivering the equipment this time, but because he knew you were here, the President personally…”
“Ju Ze, that’s enough.”
Yan Xingzhou finally spoke, interrupting Ju Ze’s considerate explanation on his behalf. He carefully scrutinized Lin Xi from head to toe. Only after confirming that the man hadn’t rashly participated in the fierce battle himself did he relax and meet Lin Xi’s gaze. “Are you sure you want to call me to account at a time like this?”
Lin Xi slowly blinked. “What, is President Yan afraid to admit what he’s done?”
From the moment the two met, their conversation was filled with a palpable subtlety. Not only did Su Muye subconsciously crane his neck, but even Su Qiuyin couldn’t help but shift his attention from the headquarters document in his hand.
Yan Xingzhou: “……….”
After a pause of several seconds, just as he was about to speak again, he saw Lin Xi walk up to him and skillfully adjust his necktie. “Forget it. For the sake of you coming here for me despite looking down on the United Administration so much, we’ll settle the previous matter privately when we get back. It’s work hours now, after all. Let’s talk about official business first, President Yan.”
Lin Xi methodically straightened Yan Xingzhou’s slightly crooked tie, then satisfactorily smoothed out the wrinkles on his shoulders. He took the tablet from Su Qiuyin’s hand and handed it over with a smile. “This is the operation order just issued by headquarters. For a long time to come, N City and the surrounding coastal cities will be the focus of the first phase of the operation. In terms of supplies, we hope the Wanyuan Group can provide a lot of support.”
Yan Xingzhou glanced at the content on the screen. “As long as it’s needed, I will do my best to satisfy the demand.”
“What, the order has already arrived?” Su Muye’s attention finally shifted from the “Boss and Sister-in-law” drama. After leaning over to Yan Xingzhou’s side for a look, his expression also became a bit complicated. “As expected, in this situation, the only way to ensure the safety of the general public is to evacuate the personnel first. With so many coastal cities, the Tenth Administration will probably be busy for a while.”
“The same goes for your Ninth Administration.” As he spoke, Lin Xi had already tapped a few lines of authorization commands on the tablet screen and handed it to Su Muye with a grin. “Then, from now on, the deployment of the coastal battlefront will be your full responsibility, Director Su. As for rift-related work, just contact Su Qiuyin at any time. Our Third Administration members are always willing to cooperate with his work arrangements. I’m sure you two can work together happily.”
“What, my full responsibility? What, work together happily?” Su Muye subconsciously took the tablet from Lin Xi’s hand. When he looked up again, he saw that Lin Xi, the nominal supreme commander, had already briskly put on his jacket. “…You’re leaving?”
“Of course. I only came over to understand the situation, and now I have. As a rookie, I won’t get in the way here.” After buttoning up, Lin Xi didn’t forget to glance at the time. “According to the United Administration’s work regulations, when there are no work requirements, it can be considered off-duty time. And looking at the time now, I’ve already put in enough hours for today, so…”
He smiled and waved at Yan Xingzhou. “President Yan, if you’re also finished, I think we can go home from work together. It’s a good chance to properly resolve our private issues.”
Su Muye was speechless. “…We’re this busy, is this really appropriate?”
Lin Xi looked at Yan Xingzhou innocently. “Is it not appropriate?”
“It’s appropriate.”
Yan Xingzhou replied, “If possible, I hope you never set foot in here again.”
Watching the two of them leave the main control room one after the other, Su Muye began to suspect that the sole purpose of him accompanying his boss here was simply to pick up his sister-in-law and go home.
After standing alone at the door, disheveled in the wind for a while, he felt a light tap on his shoulder. He turned to see Ju Ze smiling comfortingly. “It’s alright, Director Su. As the representative of the Wanyuan Group, I will also stay here to accompany you while you work overtime.”
“…”
Tears streamed down Su Muye’s face. “Thank, you, so, much!”
